Oculoplastic surgery is the term used to define all surgical procedures for prolapse of upper and lower eyelids due to aging and gravity. These procedures can usually be performed under local and general anesthesia, take approximately 45 – 90 minutes and do not require hospital admission. The prolapse may sometimes also narrow the field of vision. Both cosmetically and medically blepharoplasty (eyelid reconstruction surgery) is the most widely performed reconstructive surgery worldwide. Sick leave on these procedures is also minimal.
